Moms

This spring, at Opera on Tap’s “Her Kind” Cabaret and at American Opera Projects’ “First Glimpse” concert, Frances Pollock and I previewed a piece from our opera/musical-in-progress, Moms, with the song, “In Twenty Minutes.”

We are also in the process of gathering thoughts and anecdotes from moms. If you are willing to share some of your experiences with us, please let us know! (You can email me at emily.roller@gmail.com.) We’ve been asking the following questions:

  1. What’s the best part about being a mother?
  2. What’s the worst part about being a mother?
  3. What’s the hardest part about being a mother?
  4. What is a personal story that captures what being a mother is to you?
  5. How is motherhood different from fatherhood?
  6. Do you think you fall into any stereotypes that are held for moms? (Overprotective, tiger, helicopter, anti-vaccine, etc.)? Which ones? If not, how have you avoided them?
  7. Is it important to maintain an identity outside of being a mother? If so, what other identities have you maintained?
  8. How do you feel about how mothers are portrayed in the media? Are there examples that accurately mirror your experience?
  9. What advice would you give to a person thinking about having kids?
  10. What did we forget to ask? What should we consider as we write a show about moms?
