As our graduate thesis, Mike von der Nahmer and I wrote a first draft of a musical/opera based on the book of Esther. Esther is an adaptation of the Book of Esther that focuses on the roles of three women, Esther, Queen Vashti, and Zaresh, in this biblical story in which the oppressed become the oppressors.
I have been continually fascinated by how relevant the ancient biblical stories I was taught as a child remain today–though the lens I tend to view them with is quite different from the one I used in Sunday School. Mike and I are excited to continue development of this piece, with a reading (in English) in New York this year in preparation for a production (in German) in Germany in 2020.
